A jump squat is a squat
where you jump as you come out of your squat. These are known as
plyometric exercises for athletes who need explosive power or a
higher vertical jump.
Plyometrics work by
stretching out the muscle before the contraction. When you jump, your
muscles are contracting rapidly to send you up into the air. When you
squat before hand, you stretch those muscles out all the way, so they
have farther to contract when you let them go.
They make an excellent
addition to any bodyweight workout routine.
