4-Hour Body Review: How You Could Be Wasting Your Time With This Book

Is it possible to lose 20 pounds in 30 days, add 50 pounds to your deadlifts in a few months, and give your partner a 15 minute orgasm again and again? Tim Ferriss seems to think so, and he explains how all this is possible in his book 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman.

4-Hour Body Review

Ever since The 4-Hour Body was released a few months ago, people have been emailing me to see what I actually think of the book. I actually didn't pick it up right away, but after reading about it quite a bit and receiving so many requests for a review, I went ahead and ordered a copy on Amazon to see if it actually delivered on its promises for strength without weights.

If you've never heard of The 4 Hour Body, I'll save a lot of time and words by just letting you watch this trailer.

Okay, what the trailer is telling us is that Tim Ferriss knows all the secrets to performing superhuman feats: feats that encompass strength, weight loss, physical stamina, sexual prowess, and how to sleep only two hours a day and feel rested. This is covering a tremendous amount of ground, making it nearly impossible to review the entire book as a whole.

Rather, the 4-Hour Body is more like a cookbook than a novel, and Tim Ferriss even suggests in the forward that you don't try to read the entire book in one sitting. Some people may not ever make it to some of the sections, because a bodybuilder may have no interest in learning how to run 100 miles, and someone who wants to lose weight may not want to learn how to utilize polyphasic sleep. (I think everyone will be interested in the chapter on better sex though...I know that's the first chapter I thumbed to.)

Is the 4-Hour Body a Waste of Time?

Now, this begs the question of whether or not the book is just a giant waste of time if you're only interested in one thing. I mean, if you're a female who wants to slim down your waistline a little, it's doubtful that you would be interested in gaining 30 pounds of muscle in 30 days. In that scenario, yes, it's possible that the Four Hour Body isn't for you. Conversely, I personally found that I could take something from nearly every chapter. I haven't tried polyphasic sleep yet, but it's something that interests me that I'd love to have a go at some time in the future.

Gaining Muscle in the 4-Hour Body

I personally found that the section on adding muscle really delivered. That's the reason I bought the book in the first place, and that's the chapter I read first (besides the sex one). My results were not as impressive as Tim's I'll admit, but I certainly saw some improvements in my lifting capabilities and I ended up gaining 12 pounds of muscle in 30 days, a feat that I had never been able to accomplish previously.

Summary

So, is Tim Ferriss's book The 4-Hour Body an incredible waste of time? It depends what your expectations are. If you want some unique methods of gaining muscle, then no. If you want to lose weight, no. If you want to become intimate with a woman's lower anatomy, a resounding NO. The only reason it may be a waste of your time is if you buy it and never really try anything that Tim Ferriss does. I would personally read anything by Tim Ferriss because I like the way he brings his own personal experiences into the formula, it's always a bit of a rollercoaster ride, and I love every minute of it

Hindu Pushups and Hindu Squats Are Explosive Bodyweight Exercises for Athletes

-->

For a unique exercise that is guaranteed to build strength without weights, nothing is better than Hindu squats and Hindu pushups. These exercises came out of India and have long been one of the main bodyweight training exercises of Indian wrestlers.

These exercises have recently become popular thanks to Matt Furey's workout series Combat Conditioning. Most of this guys training routines are extremely hyped, more so than they should be, but nonetheless they offer excellent training tips once you make it through the crap.

Hindu exercises are perfect for building speed, power, strength, and endurance, all without any weights. They should ideally be done with a high amount of reps, and I'm a firm believer in the “reps to failure” type of workout, where you do one set of as many reps as you can before you reach failure. That's what it takes to get real strength without weights.

Hindu Pushups - Intense Workouts for Explosive Upper Body Strength

A Hindu Pushup

Hindu pushups are really nothing similar to the pushups you are probably used to. They have the power to bring incredible strength without weights. They will work your shoulders, back, forearms, chest, abs, and biceps until they literally burn with pain.

Hindu pushups have been used for hundreds of years in India, but have recently become a little more popular again as people search for ways to gain strength without weights or costly gym memberships. You can perform these at home in your living room, and they'll probably end up doing you more good than all that expensive gym equipment.

Like Hindu squats, the goal with these is to go for as many reps as possible until your muscles are ready to give out. This is a “train to failure” type of home workout, so give it all you got.

Instead of a written description, you can watch this video that shows how to do them. Remember to breathe and try to make the motion as fluid as possible. You are the water.

For a real boost in muscle gain, take a look at the somanabolic muscle maximizer download. It's incredible.

Hindu Squats - Incredible Exercises for Raw Leg Power

A Hindu Squat

Hindu squats are similar in function to regular squats. They work all of the muscles in the leg, including the calves, hamstrings, and quads, and are an incredible strength without weights exercise for your lungs, cardiovascular system, abdominal muscles, lower back, and hips.

You're going to want to breathe slowly and steadily as you do this, and go for as many reps as possible. Set a goal of 50 for yourself to see if you can make it. Train to failure.

This is what you want to do with Hindu pushups as well- train until your muscles are ready to just give out.

Here are the steps to performing a Hindu squat, and you can also watch the video below.

Start in a standing position with your hands near your chest. Slowly lower yourself down into a squat, and while doing so stick your arms out behind you.

Near the bottom of the squat, pop up onto your toes and then quickly push yourself up to standing while throwing your hands out in front of you.

Here is the video to watch.

The only thing better than Hindu squats (well, maybe not better) is this Somanabolic Muscle Maximizer Review. Not the program, just the review. It's an awesome review.

These Unique Bodyweight Exercises Give You Explosive Strength Without Weights

Explosive Strength Without Weights

If you don't have the time or money to get to the gym on a regular basis, you're not alone. There are tons of people who just aren't able to make it to a commercial gym to get in a little bit of exercise after work.

Maybe your schedule is tight. Maybe the gym is too far away. Maybe it costs too much for a membership. Or maybe you just don't like the snooty members who work out there!

Whatever the reason, don't worry about it! The gym is for wusses anyway. Bodyweight exercises make it possible to gain real, unstoppable strength without weights or shiny expensive gyms.

To start with, you have the basic exercises: pushups, pullups, squats, and crunches. These exercises combined can brutalize your body and get you ripped in no time.

In addition to those exercises though, you have an incredible amount of variation to work with. In particular, the benefits of Hindu pushups and Hindu squats for the strength of your entire body are out of this world.

Indian wrestlers have been using them for centuries to stay in incredible shape. Click the link above to learn more about Hindu pushups and Hindu squats. I love them!

Real, Definitive Strength Without Weights - The Strongman Workouts

It doesn't matter if you're a bodybuilder, determined athlete, martial artist, or just a guy or girl looking to get into great strength; the goal of this website is to provide informative information about various bodybuilding and strength gaining techniques that you can do at your own home- most of the time you don't even need weights or equipment! These methods are the true ways to gain incredible strength without weights.

This website focuses on three aspects:

You've seen them on TV, you've seen what they can do. Did you know that those exercises aren't just for the hardcore muscle machines? Strongman workouts combine innovation, full body strength exercises, power techniques, and mental focus for one of the BEST all around workout regimens out there.

Your body is your own gym – You can do isometric exercises anywhere, whether it's in the car, in line at the grocery store, or at the club working up your nerve to go talk to that sexy redhead.

If you want to define isometrics, it's basically putting tension on the muscles without bending the joint. (A bit different than plyometrics, which we'll talk about a bit too.)

The power and muscle gain afforded by isometrics are almost unbelievable. You can do an entire workout in just a few minutes a day, bringing you incredible strength without weights.

Pushups, situps, pullups, dips, and squats. These exercises just skim the surface of what you can do with your body.

Ever try a clapping handstand pushup? If you haven't you can find out how to build yourself to that level here on this site.

Being a strongman doesn't mean you have to look like the incredible hulk. Strongmen are about functional strength, ease of mobility, and endurance, both mental and physical. This is what gaining strength without weights or expensive gear is all about.

We're going to be getting into kettlebells too soon - pure, unadulterated Russian strength training

At the end of the day, nothing really beats the Kyle Leon Somanabolic Muscle Maximizer in terms of sheer effective muscle gain.

Isometric Exercises - Do They Really Work?

I've always been interested in martial arts. As a kid, I would spend hours watching kung fu movies from the public library. They didn't even have to be good! I just loved all of them. I saw Enter the Dragon, my first Bruce Lee movie, when I was 8, and immediately went to beg my parents to put me into karate classes.

I eventually became a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, which focuses on standing strikes and sparring, and then when I moved to Costa Rica I started taking Krav Maga classes.

That's where I learned about isometrics.

A lot of people really question whether isometric exercises really work. They certainly don't look impressive...most of the time you can't even tell when someone is doing one (which of course makes them perfect for any situation). They're the ultimate Strongman exercise.

Any workout will show results over time, and the truth is, most workout routines use isometrics anyway. When you're bench pressing and you're pushing for that one last rep, you tense all of your muscles for a tiny little boost of extra strength to get the bar up. Now you can gain a huge amount of strength without weights.

That tensing is what isometrics is all about.

It's such an intense workout when done properly that you'll have a leaner, more toned appearance in just a few weeks. You'll be sweating after the first few minutes and about to collapse after 20 minutes.

The next day your muscles will feel like you ran a marathon barefoot while fighting a steroidal grizzly bear with a bent toothpick.

Nobody needs to define isometrics for you once you actually do it for the first time. This article is a great starter on isometric exercises for wimps. You'll learn where that explosive strength comes from or you'll die trying! (kidding...)

300 Warrior Workout Video - Ultimate Bodyweight Workout

I ran across this video while looking for new workouts to try, and the person in the video doesn't look too impressive, I'll be honest. I tried that workout though and IT KILLED ME!

He adds several comments on the video as it goes, and he's correct. Ever since the movie 300 came out a few years ago everyone has this idea of the Spartans as well oiled, perfectly tanned muscle machines.

The truth is they probably didn't have such a well defined physique. What they DID have was raw, brutal power and the ability to move quickly, endlessly, and with intensity.

This is what should define an athlete, not the way they look. Anyone can learn how to get real, raw strength without weights just by watching this.

I challenge you, try this workout and post a comment with your time.

Try it for yourself and see if you can even come close to finishing.

This is the only 300 Spartan workout you need.

And don't miss my one and only Somanabolic Muscle Maximizer Download and Review to get the inside scoop on how this program can transform your body.

Power Warrior Workout With Zuzana

I found this video recently from Bodyrock. This is an incredible power workout that Zuzana is doing that really tears up the abdominals, thighs, and gluts. All of this adds strength without weights or other gear.

Those burpees are not easy with the pushup in the middle. Above all, this girl has a tight, ripped body so you know those exercises are working for here.

I make a point to try out each one of these workout videos before I put them up on Strongman Exercises for Athletes so that I know they work. I was experiencing a hot burn in my thighs after the entire thing, and today they feel a little bit tighter, definitely stronger.

The thing to remember with bodyweight exercises is that innovation is key. I had never seen that style of leg raises before, but it is incredible once you get it going.

Tire Flip - Strongman Exercises for Athletes

Tire Flip

One of the oldest Strongman events, the tire flip is a total body workout for athletes; it trains you to use different muscles simultaneously to complete your goal, bringing you massive strength without weights. The great thing about the tire flip exercise (and all of these Strongman workouts) is that it forces you to innovate in your technique. There is no one way to flip a 700 pound tire!

Innovation is a massive benefit no matter what your sport is. Thinking outside the box is what is going to turn you from a good athlete into a great athlete.

Where to Get a Tractor Tire

Tires are easy to get- use your phone book and call up a local tire company. Most of the time they pay a hauling company to move these away, so you're helping them out by taking one off their hands. It feels good to help people out once in awhile, doesn't it?

This Strongman exercise is a combination of:

  • Deadlift
  • Calf raises
  • Front squats
  • Heavy core work

A fantastic tire flip workout is:

3 sets with 5 flips in each set. Rest for 3 minutes between each set.

As a variation, you can set one minute on the clock and try to get as many flips as you can in that time. This is a TRUE endurance test, but it's going to make a beast out of you in no time.

Can you handle the burn?

Backwards Sled Drag - Strongman Exercises for Athletes

Backwards Sled Pull

For posterior chain strength, nothing beats a backwards sled pull. Use any heavy object; no need to dish out for a real sled. You can use your tractor tire from the tire flip exercise and a rope in a pinch. Face the sled, pick up the rope, and pull the thing backwards.

This Strongman exercise for athletes is going to pound your quads and lower back in a way that you've never experienced from all your time in the gym. This is real, functional strength that will give you mobility as well as power. All this strength without weights too!

The sled pull exercise should look like this:

2 sets of 50 yards with a minute of rest between each set.

If you combine all of the Strongman workouts, make this the last one- and believe me it's going to be BRUTAL...but you're going to gain massive, rapid strength in a short amount of time by doing it.

Strongman exercises are just as mental as they are physical. You need determination to pull these off- they're not for wimps.

Do you have what it takes to be a champion?

Farmer's Walk - Strongman Exercises for Athletes

Farmer's Walk

This simple Strongman workout builds structural strength, shoulder strength, and grip strength. It powers your obliques and upper back like no other workout I've ever seen. You'll get a lot of extra stability in your knees and ankles to boot.

To do the farmer's walk, grab any big, heavy object that you can grip in one hand. A big pair of dumbbells or your kettlebell work great. Beginner's can walk a straight line of 50 meters, making sure to lift with their shoulders and keep the elbows bent slightly (you'll have to, so you don't knock your weights on your knees as you walk.

The zig-zag farmer's walk takes the farmer's walk a step further by adding a slalom element. Take some orange cones and place them in a line 10 yards apart. (Every serious trainer should have at least one set of cones or ground markers. If you don't, you can just use anything for the markers) You'll feel the burn on your core and obliques about 10x more by doing the zig-zag instead of the straight farmer's walk.

Farmer's walk combines elements of:

  • shrugs
  • grip work
  • rack pulls
  • lunges

It's a full upper body and stability workout that will test your strength to the MAX.

For the farmer's walk workout:

3 reps (either regular or zig-zag) with a minute of rest between each rep

The Farmer's walk brings an intense workout to the table and can give you amazing strength without weights or weight machines.

Do you think you can push it to the max?

Keg Toss - Strongman Exercises for Athletes

Keg Toss

Let's start with the basic overhead keg toss as our first exercise. As always, it's important to do a thorough warm-up first. The keg toss is absolutely perfect for for getting that EXPLOSIVE power in your hips and shoulders.Who would have thought you could get such raw, powerful strength without weights?

To do the keg toss, go into a squat with the keg resting on the ground in front of you. Grip it firmly on each side, and then launch yourself to a standing position using your thighs and gluts. Use your upper back muscles to gain leverage and LAUNCH the keg backwards over your head. It's like a two-arm kettlebell swing on steroids!

This is actually a variation of a competition that Vikings used to perform with a rock to determine who the “biggest man” was.

Where to Get a Keg

Where do you get a keg? Go to a nearby liquor store and just ask for one. Some places will give you one or two for free, while others will ask for a few bucks. In the end it shouldn't cost you more than twenty bucks for a great empty keg.

When you're training for your Strongman workouts with the keg toss, you can adjust the wight of the keg in increments by adding water to it. Here's a sample keg toss workout that you can do at home:

A) 2 tosses with an empty keg, resting one minute between each toss

B) 2 tosses with a half full keg, resting 30 seconds between each toss

  1. 2 tosses with a full keg, resting 15 seconds between each toss.

By the time you finish your last reps, your muscles will be BURNING. You should feel it in your forearms, triceps, biceps, shoulders, and thighs.

Are you strong enough to handle it?

Take a look at the Somanabolic Muscle Maximizer Download and Review I have on the site too. You won't be disappointed!

4 Basic Strongman Exercises for Athletes

You know the scenario. It's late, there's nothing on TV, your thumb is starting to max out from flicking the button on the remote, and suddenly, SUDDENLY, you come across some guys who looks like the Incredible Hulk flipping a car with his bare hands.

These World's Strongest Man Competitions are a spectator's delight- you almost HAVE to watch as these incredible athletes shred through the laws of physics by flipping 700 pound tractor tires, pulling semi trucks with just a rope and some grunting, and heave massive stones with less effort than you take to get out of bed in the morning.

The thing is, there's no reason for Strongman exercises to be just a spectator sport anymore. The techniques used can stand to benefit ANY athlete in ANY sport. Why? Because Strongman exercises are about using the entire body to pull of a task, and more importantly they're about innovation.

Strongman is About Innovation

There may be a prescribed formula for how you are supposed to do a squat or a dead lift, but when you're flipping a tractor tire over, you have to come up with your own set of rules, based you YOUR own strengths.

So what if I told you that there was an easy way for you to practice these techniques at home? What if there was a way for you to acquire the same mental and physical toughness that those guys on TV have?

If you don't believe me, just read on. Hell, I'll even tell you where to get the supplies. These workouts are the apex of what it means to get explosive strength without weights.
